BOM Management: The Blueprint of Production Intelligence
A Bill of Materials (BOM) is the Single Source of Truth synchronizing Engineering, Procurement, and the Shop Floor. Edelweis implements a Multi-Level, Integrated BOM Structure designed to eliminate "Ghost Parts," prevent stockouts, and ensure every gram of material is accounted for in the global supply chain.
1. The BOM Hierarchy (Tiered Architecture)
We structure BOMs to reflect physical assembly reality, allowing for modular kitting and parallel production:
EBOM (Engineering)
Organized by functional systems. The direct output of our Naming Conventions and PDM system.
MBOM (Manufacturing)
Organized by assembly sequence. Includes adhesives, lubricants, and non-CAD items.
SBOM (Service)
Filtered for user-replaceable units (FRUs) and maintenance kits for field support.
2. Intelligent Data Fields
| Field Name | Data Point | Utility |
|---|---|---|
| Part Number | Intelligent Syntax. | Unique identification across ERP/PLM. |
| Quantity (Qty) | Exact count or volume. | Preventing assembly line stoppages. |
| Source Type | Make vs. Buy. | Flagging custom fabrication vs. COTS. |
| Mass Properties | Net weight per unit. | Real-time shipping weight calculation. |
| Revision Level | Current Released Status. | Ensuring factory builds the latest design. |
3. BOM Transformation & Configuration
-
•
Phantom Assemblies: Logical groupings in CAD that streamline picking without existing as physical sub-assemblies.
-
•
Interchangeability Mapping: Identifying "Equivalent Parts" to allow vendor switching if supply chains fail.
-
•
BOM Redlining: Formal ECO process where every addition/modification is timestamped and audited.
4. Supply Chain Integration
-
•
COTS Standardization: Prioritizing components from the Standard Parts Library to maximize bulk-buying power.
-
•
Raw Material Estimation: Including stock requirements (e.g., Al 6061-T6 Bar) to assist the CNC shop in material kitting.
Technical Directives
| Directive | Protocol |
|---|---|
| No "Manual" BOMs | All BOMs must be exported directly from PDM; manual Excel entry is strictly prohibited. |
| Unit Consistency | All quantities must use standardized SI units unless legacy ERP specifies otherwise. |
| Hardware Grouping | Fasteners must be consolidated by DFA Protocols to minimize the variety of unique SKUs. |
