Glossary of Terms: Technical Lexicon

In high-precision engineering, ambiguity is a failure state. Edelweis utilizes a standardized Glossary of Terms to ensure that every stakeholder—from the Lead Engineer to the Vendor—operates with identical semantic clarity across all logs and technical data packages.

1. Design & Modeling Terminology

Master Modeling (MM)
A top-down methodology where a single "skeleton" part controls the geometry of all child components.
Mate Controller
Protocol used to define and simulate complex mechanical degrees of freedom and motion sequences.
MBD
Model-Based Definition; embedding GD&T and manufacturing metadata directly into the 3D model.

Parametric Intent: The logic used to define how a model reacts to dimensional changes (e.g., "Feature A must always be 5mm from Edge B").

2. Engineering Analysis & Validation

  • Boundary Conditions: Defined constraints (loads, supports, pressures) applied to mimic real-world environments in FEA/CFD.
  • Factor of Safety (FoS/SF): Ratio of material strength to maximum calculated stress; the buffer against structural failure.
  • Mesh Sensitivity Study: Validation process increasing grid density to ensure results are mathematically stable.
  • Convergence: The point where further refinement no longer significantly changes simulation results.

3. Manufacturing & Quality Control

Term Definition Context
GD&T Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Standardized symbolic language for part geometry.
CTQ Critical-to-Quality. Features with direct impact on safety or performance.
3D Printing FDM/SLA/SLS methods. Used in prototyping for rapid design validation.
Climb Milling Cutter rotates with direction of feed. Standard CAM protocol for superior surface finish.
NIST-Traceable Standard traceable back to NIST. Mandatory for all QC and monitoring tools.

4. Data Management & Security

  • Single Source of Truth (SSOT): Concept that the PDM Vault contains the only authoritative version of any design.
  • Technical Data Package (TDP): Collection of CAD, drawings, BOMs, and specs required for manufacturing.
  • Single Sign-On (SSO): Centralized authentication method linked to Identity & Access security.
  • Delta-Sync: Optimization method that only updates specific changed parts of a file during cloud collaboration.

Technical Directives

Directive Protocol
Naming Consistency All parts in the BOM must use the "Noun, Modifier" convention (e.g., "Bolt, Hex Head").
Acronym Restriction Use of non-standardized acronyms is prohibited to prevent vendor confusion.
Update Frequency New terms must be vetted by the Reviewer before being adopted into project logs.
